CHALLENGE: The highly successful doctor's group had 2 independent surgery rooms, that were underutilized because of the limited recovery room space. Each procedure in the surgery room might take 15 to 30 minutes, but the recovery was closer to 4 hours, thus the number of procedures was limited by the recovery room capacity.
SOLUTION: K4 determined that significant consolidation of redundant functions was needed to maximize service delivery within existing medical offices. In developing the 4,000 sf remodel of their main surgery office location, K4 “reflowed” the arrival, preparation, surgery, and recovery functions, increased the number of procedure rooms from two to twelve, added appropriate recovery room space, and ensured that considerable human touches were incorporated—without sacrificing function or technology. The renovation led to other office location modifications including consolidating regional business offices, as well as a renovated audiology labs, doctors’ offices, and waiting rooms. To better control traffic flow and operations at several locations, K4 incorporated new “command centers”, e.g., reception desk, nurse’s station, and business desk. K4 mocked up a recovery station so the client team could ensure optimal functionality. K4 planning kept the facility operating during Implementation. Additionally, the doctor's had K4 streamline several allergy treatment centers and to expand other centers. All of the workflow analyses performed by K4 led to the overall improvement of the functionality and bottom line of each location.
