TITLE:Bond Hill Library
CLIENT:Public Library of Cincinnati & Hamilton County
INDUSTRY:Community
LOCATION:Cincinnati, Ohio
SIZE:1 story, 11,668 sq. ft.
SERVICES:Due Diligence, Architecture, Construction Administration

CHALLENGE: To combine two branch libraries with declining circulation from separate decrepit locations into a single vibrant location in a facility shared with other community-oriented agencies. The construction cost was to be funded entirely by the generous private donations from the two communities. The Library requested a dramatic interior reflective of the character of the communities.

SOLUTION: The result is the largest branch within Cincinnati city limits, and the facility offers the largest number of computers of any city branch and the most advanced technology of all library branches in Hamilton County. The new branch is positioned to establish an important civic presence and community resource well into the future. The dramatic interior incorporates abundant natural light, an open floor plan, and an inviting color scheme, all in an environment that is designed to promote interactive learning. Patrons enter either from the buildings atrium lobby or adjacent parking and are greeted by the graciously curved circulation desk. The new facility is organized architecturally around three separate and prominent stack areas that are illuminated by double-height windows. These stacks house a children’s area, a teen area, and an adult area. The stacks radiate from the semi-circular curtain wall glazing at the adult reading area. 27 computer stations are interspersed throughout, and a program/meeting area that seats 50 is also available. The support functions of the library are tucked away behind the circulation desk.
